February Was About To Kill Me with BAJE ONE from JUNK SCIENCE
Posted on 03/20/2009

Hi everybody! Long time no speak, please excuse my absence. I blame it on February, yeah the month. February sucks. Always has, always will. (My apologies to Black History Month enthusiasts and fans of Valentine’s Day, it’s nothing personal.)
Every winter I think I’m doing fine, even through the family stress of the holidays, the enforced debauchery of New Years, etc. Then February rolls around and it’s just too much. The never-endingness of the Northeast winter just sits on my chest like some kind of fat, sweaty schoolyard bully and I swear it’s like I can’t breathe. Every day it’s grey and 37 degrees and rainy and awful and it feels like it’ll never end.
I’ve been told that some people feel this way all year round. If you’re one of those people, my heart goes out to you.
One good thing happened to me (and Snafu) in February, one very very good thing. We were paid a visit from an old friend, a seriously talented man by the name of Andrew Gura.
We first met Dr. Gura back in 2005 when me and Snaf were working with Scion. He directed our very first music video for our song “Roads”.
We didn’t know this guy from Adam before we made that video together, but because of his accutely developed talent in collaboration, he delivered to us something beautiful, something that truly represented who we were. It was a special experience, making that video, and I’ve been in touch with the man ever since.
So when Andrew told me he was coming to NYC, I was amped. I asked him how he felt about making a lo-fi, high-concept video for us. He said he was down. Dude makes videos for Nas and Snoop...
He came over one day in late February. We had no concepts, we had no money, just a song and a few ideas. He took one look at the camera we had and shook his head. He asked me if I had heard about a camera called the Cannon Mark II 5D. “It’s a stills camera, but the new one shoots full-res HD video” he said, “I’ve been wanting to check it out.” Fucking weird coincidence... my brother is a photographer and he JUST bought that camera.
Half an hour later we were making a video. A real old-school, hand-made video. We came up with everything on the fly and shot the entire thing inside me and Snafu’s apartment. We shot over the course of three days, with my brother Vito stepping in as DP for day 3. A real family affair.
The video will be out any day now. The song, “Fire Drill” will be part of a Def Jux itunes exclusive compilation called “Time Travel”, due out next week. Until then, I wanted to share some stills so you can see what we’ve been working on. May your winter come to an end soon, wherever and whoever you are. Enjoy.
